Empowering Voters Committee

This new committee, organized in September, 2025, is a team of LWV - New Ulm members serving as the local complement of the national League of Women Voters Unite and Rise 8.5 Campaign. This Campaign aims to educate and activate 8.5 million people in the United States to stand up for the U.S. Constitution, protect the pillars of our democracy, oppose efforts to hinder voting, and strengthen citizen participation in government. The national League of Women Voters launched this campaign upon declaring a constitutional crisis in the United States, wherein freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and separation of powers are under attack as the Executive Branch consolidates power.

Locally, the Empowering Voters Committee is working on a series of educational efforts for social media, newspaper, radio, and TV on a range of topics such as League of Women Voters purpose and history, voter registration, how elections work, being an election judge, redistricting, gerrymandering and the legislative process.  Throughout Minnesota, local Leagues are reaching out to voters to stand up for our democracy by and organizing efforts as part of the Unite and Rise 8.5 campaign.  Visit  https://www.lwv.org/take-action   for information on the Unite and Rise 8.5 Campaign.  Co-Chairs of the League of Women Voters - New Ulm Empowering Voters Committee are Yvonne Webber and Theresa Keaveny.

Environment Awareness Committee

The LWV Environmental Awareness Committee has the task of bringing various issues, problems, and concerns about our environment, to the attention of our members, and our community.  The “environmental movement” started in the 1960’s and continues to grow and evolve. Our goal today, is to bring greater awareness, and appreciation, to our natural surroundings, bring environmental issues to the forefront by educating ourselves and our community, expressing concerns, and determining if there are actions we can take. Our question… how can we alter behavior, think differently, and, hopefully, keep our earth prospering…. ?

League of Women Voters Upper Mississippi River Region- LWV UMRR

The League of Women Voters Upper Mississippi River Region Inter League Organization is comprised of member Leagues, including New Ulm, through the Upper Mississippi River watershed, from the headwaters to the confluence with the Ohio River, including state Leagues in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois.

Organized in 2015, The UMRR chose to focus initial work on reducing water pollution from excess nutrients - nitrogen and phosphorus.  Nutrient pollution leads to excess algae growth that points water supplies and causes dead zones, like in the Gulf of Mexico. Groundwater depletion due to over-use is also a growing focus of the work of LWV UMRR, particularly in areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Visit the LWV UMRR website for more information and to get involved.  LWV - NE UMRR contact is Megan Benage.
